inahongkongdrizzle:

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the small market town of Melton Mowbray, one of culinary capitals of the UK. It is a tiny town in Leicestershire, world famous for its stilton cheese and pork pies. I sampled both, and plenty of other good stuff while I was there too!

The loaves stamped with Hovis! I have not seen those in years; we used to have a village baker deliver, and he always brought those.  (He carried a large wicker basket with different kinds of bread for us to choose. Those days were wonderful).

Photographer Peter Menzel’s book, Hungry Planet, features families photographed with a week’s worth of food.

this is pretty scary

Be thankful. And cut down.

A humbling photoset to keep in mind when reflecting on what Ramadan has taught us.

Here and here are more extensive set of images including more than these four families, and here is info on the financial aspect (I am sort of boggling at the German family - they are buying brand food, and apparently meat that doesn’t come pre-packaged - so it would be fairly expensive, but 375€? Really?)- though I won’t deny that the photoset already drives home a number of important messages.

I kind of want to record this for myself. How convenient that today is Sunday - so I’ll start making a list beginning tomorrow morning, and try and get a picture plus price list uploaded Monday next week. (Note to self: I could scrape by on 5€ - 7,50€ per week as a student when being extremely frugal, curious how this would look now.)

Anyone with me? Awareness of this won’t hurt.

The Ecuadorian and Egyptian looks the healthiest. This is extremely sobering.
